With Summer reading and Sammy taking over Off the Shelf for the summer, I decided to go digital with this month's review since I have some great recommendations for summer.
First up is Emily Henry's new book, Great Big Beautiful Life. Alice Scott is a columnist for The Scratch, a celebrity-devoted magazine, and has obtained access to the elusive media heiress Margaret Ives. The only hitch is that Hayden Anderson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning music journalist, has also been invited to compete for the chance to write Margaret's memoir. This is a wonderful book with memorable characters and several plot twists that I didn't see coming. It has been one of my favorites for the year and my all-time favorite of Emily Henry's.
As it is summer reading, I am going to list some books that are great summer (or anytime) reads. Deanna Raybourn's Killers of a Certain Age and Kills Well with Others are two great books about mature women assassins—highly enjoyable and great fun. Abbi Waxman's new book One Death at a Time is another favorite. It was a little different for her, focusing more on a murder mystery/redemption theme, but it still had great dialogue and characters, several plot twists, and I hope a sequel in the works. Stephen King's new book Never Flinch comes out at the end of May. It is another featuring Holly Gibney, and it looks great. Craig Johnson has a new Longmire Return to Sender, and Michael Connelly has a new series with a new Detective Stillwell as well as another Lincoln Lawyer coming in October or November. And finally, the big one for the summer is Daniel Silva's new book due to come out in the middle of July. There is something for everyone this summer, so happy reading. Until next time, so many books, so little time.
