Kristi's Corner: Summer Reading

I am a fan of Taylor Jenkins Reid, but I had put off reading Atmosphere because I just didn't think I would like it. I then read a review from someone about her book, Carrie DeSoto is Back.  The reviewer said she also didn't want to read this because the subject, tennis, didn't interest her, but then she finally read it and loved the book. This is the same way I feel about Atmosphere. While I didn't think I'd be interested in the subject, I ended up loving this book. Joan Goodwin is one of the best characters I've read. She is a professor of astrophysics and math at Rice University in 1980 when a friend tells her they are seeking people—including civilians—for the astronaut program. Joan is one of those unflappable people who does everything for everyone else, and despite the fact that she takes care of Frances, her niece, she is determined to go to space. She begins training with a wonderfully diverse group of people with military and civilian backgrounds. And she even falls in love. Not only was I wrong about my initial thoughts that I'd dislike this book, but reading it made me want to read more about and study astrophysics and astronomy. The way she explained these complex topics was truly amazing. The plot is wonderful and set during an important time in the space program. I highly recommend you take a chance on it.
