Applications for Summer Reading volunteers are available, now! Teens must be 12 to 18 to apply. The deadline to turn them in is Monday, May 5th.
Applicants will be required to adhere to a code of conduct and have a signed photo release on file (documents provided in the application packet).
We ask that teens be aware that they are required to do work during volunteer hours and that some of these tasks will be things that aren't very exciting like cutting, dusting, organizing, folding, scanning, shelving, and other similar activities. There is also a lot of sitting at the volunteer desk to sign people up or collect completed challenges. The waiting can be boring, so we ask that they be prepared to read, draw (not on the table), or do other quiet activities like crocheting or knitting in between helping patrons. Also, keep in mind that teens will not be put on the schedule every time they mark themselves as available to work, as we want to keep them from becoming "bored" when there are too many helpers and not enough tasks!
Now for the fun part! We will have an orientation on Friday, May 16, when teens will get their schedules, and we will go over the reading challenges for each age group so we are prepared! We will also create badges and bags.
But wait, there's more: This year, we will have a Teen Cake Off to kick off our summer reading! May's TAB meeting will be devoted to pairing/teaming up, picking a random cake pan from our collection, and planning a decoration strategy (cakes must be decorated in the theme of summer reading: Color Our World)! This event is open to all teens and not just Volunteens or TAB members, so be sure to spread the word!
If you have any questions about volunteering, need special hours, cannot make orientation, or anything else that you think may keep you from being a volunteen this summer, please email me to ask or let me know your situation: misty.brodeur@duncanok.gov
