It's been a BUSY week at the Duncan Public Library! We started the week with an opportunity to make Faux Stained Glass Bookmarks for the adults. This craft was made possible by all of the work that Cheyenne and Makiah put in ahead of time to create the outlines which took a long time to dry. Participants filled in the design with clear glue tinted with paint to create the stained glass effect.
For those interested in learning more about stained glass, you should come by the library on Monday, June 16th at 5:30 PM to learn from Jan and Clay Cole in the library's newly renovated kitchen!
On Tuesday, the teens took up the faux stained glass mantel with creations made from picture frames and sharpies! The designs were created by YA Librarian Misty Brodeur and feature open books and the amazing Sammy the Snail. Some of the creations are on display in the Teen Library as part of the Teen Art Gallery (see Misty at the library if you'd like to add to the Teen Art display!)
We also celebrated a birthday for one of our Teen Volunteers who spent their special day volunteering with us at the library. Check out those snail cupcakes!
Ms. Darbie led the children in a craft based on Wassily Kandinsky's circles on Wednesday! Teen volunteers helped the younger kids and learned about leading a group at the same time. Don't forget: sign up for these Wednesday crafts opens on TUESDAY mornings at 9 am. There's space at 11 AM and 1 PM for kids 6-11 years old.
She gave our littlest patrons a sneak peak at Friday and a chance to work on their chalk art skills during Thursday's Storytime with a chalk on craft paper experience. They even got to see how water changes chalk art, which was more telling than any of us could guess!
Also this week, two determined teens finished out our first mystery sticker mural. They spent about two hours filling in all of the little spaces left that really brought the mural to life.
Friday dawned with a LOT of rain, and we all thought we'd be bringing the chalk art contest inside. Staff were prepped to roll out paper and clear furniture to make more space, but luckily it cleared up JUST in time start at 10 AM. It was lovely weather to be outside: overcast and breezy. The water left on the sidewalk gave amazing and vibrant colors! (Keep your eyes out for a blog post just on the images from the chalk art contest!)
We wrapped the week up on Saturday, with Director Amy Ryker setting up in the kitchen with tons of STEM building kits for the kids to build and play with. There's nothing more amazing than learning and fun! Check this out!:
Week four has a lot going on too! Monday brings a stained glass presentation led by Jan and Clay Cole, Tuesday has Teens making Basquiat-inspired neon art, and Kids are making pull string art on Wednesday. The library will be closed in observance of Juneteenth on Thursday, June 19th. But we'll be back at it again on Friday with a Library Arts program where you can learn how we get books ready for checkout and how we mend them! Saturday will bring us our first Community Crochet Hours. Come make granny squares with us to be added to this community art piece! If you'd like to learn the basics of crochet, head to our Tuesday String Theory class at 1 PM every Tuesday at the library.
