Welcome to the Weeks 4 and 5 recap! Is it technically going on in the middle of week 6? YES! But It's been two of our busiest weeks yet for Summer Reading, and it's not slowing down. Let's see what we've done the last couple of weeks.

On Monday (June 16th) Jan and Clay Cole came and led a presentation on stained glass making. Here we see Clay demonstrating how to grind the glass pieces. We noticed that some people didn't get to come who wanted to, so we'll look into doing programs like this again.

Teens made Basquiat-inspired neon art on Tuesday, June 17th! They also used some of the extra colorful scratch paper to make Sammy Snails that you'll be able to see at the end of the Summer as part of our Art Share!

Unfortunately, we don't have any pictures from the pull string art on Wednesday (they looked so good!) or from our Library Arts with Staff program. Both were well attended and looked like a lot of fun.

On Saturday, we did our first Community Crochet Blanket Hours! So far, we have about 80 squares and need about 170 to complete the blanket. If you'd like to learn more about crocheting granny squares, consider attending our String Theory fiber arts group on Tuesdays at 1 PM or coming to our next Community Crochet Blanket event on Saturday, July 19th from 11 AM - 2 PM.

On Monday (the 23rd) Adults came out to make Color Our World tie dye totes and they look FANTASTIC! Seriously, I'm super jealous of these bags ya'll.

Teens got to have a fun and nostalgia filled night on Tuesday watching Finding Nemo (the movie is 22 years old?! That's simply not possible. I refuse to believe it!)

We had popcorn made on the awesome new popcorn machine that the Friends of the Duncan Public Library bought for the library, ALL of the candy, and chilled out in our brand-new board room.

After they finished the movie, teens painted with watercolors like little kids again!

Children learned about making wool yarn and dye with Karen from Lone Ewe Fiber Arts on Wednesday! Karen leads the String Theory group on Tuesdays at 1 PM and if it involves fiber, she probably knows how to do it! She brought some processed and unprocessed wool for the kids to feel, and then we got to mixing koolaid with our yarn. Each child got the opportunity to dye their yarn, and then Karen heat set the yarn and wound it back into hanks. Children picked their yarn up later at the library.

The Library headed to the Jungle of Nool (in the heat of the day, in the cool of the pool) to see the Hodgson Voice Studio perform songs from Seussical Jr as our Thursday Storytime! It was amazing to see the kids sing and dance, plus we got to hear from many different performers about why theater is important to them. And they memorized the lyrics and choreography in just about a week?! How talented are they?!

(Some staff snagged a ticket to the performance on Friday to see the kids in their costumes with the set, and it was BEAUTIFUL. They'll be performing A Year with Frog and Toad in July, we highly recommend it!)

On Saturday, the Friends hosted a ribbon cutting for our newly renovated board room and kitchen. They voted on the Friends of the Library bylaws, read to kids, served popcorn, and raffled off some amazing items! Live music played in the annex building, Munchies for the Masses served delicious foods, local authors talked to the public, clubs tried to entice new members, and SO MUCH MORE! The Friends and the Library Board cut the ribbon upstairs and gave mini-tours of our new space. We are incredibly grateful to the Friends of the Duncan Public Library, Joann Pierce and the Duncan Public Library Board, and the McCasland Foundation for making this possible.

Things to look for in Week Six: Jessica and the Friends at Red, White, and Boom! on Thursday, July 3rd at Abe Raizen Park between 5 PM and 9:30 PM! She'll be making/updating library cards, talking about being a Friend of the Library, and giving out swag while supplies last. Stop by and say hi!

What upcoming event are you looking forward to?

  • Foam Party on Saturday, July 26th

  • Sugar Free Allstars Concert on Thursday, July 17th
