Welcome to Tween Reads! We’re going to have a ton of fun. The suggested ages for this book club are 8 to 12 years old, but that doesn’t keep kids of any other ages from joining in on the fun.
We’re going to meet each month to talk about a new book, have a snack together, and do something fun based on the book that we’re talking about!
If you have ANY questions about the book club, please talk to Ms. Jessica (that's me!) about it.
We had an AMAZING Tween Reads meeting this Thursday for our January book: Dog Man by Dav Pilkey! Participants talked about what they liked and didn't like about the book, the pictures, whether or not they'd want to have Living Spray, and their Opinions™ about Petey.
We also had snacks provided by Chickasaw Nation's Impa'Chi! Meals program, did a invisible ink puzzle, and did Dog Man Trivia.
Our February book will be Simon B. Rhymin' by Dwayne Reed. A humorous and heartwarming bounce-to-the-beat underdog story about a young rapper whose rhymes help bring his community together.
Eleven-year-old Simon Barnes dreams of becoming a world-famous rapper that everyone calls Notorious D.O.G. But for now, he's just a Chicago fifth grader who's small for his age and afraid to use his voice.
Simon prefers to lay low at school and at home, even though he's constantly spitting rhymes in his head. But when his new teacher assigns the class an oral presentation on something that affects their community, Simon must face his fears.
Why is this our next book? Well, Simon B. Rhymin’ is a fun and light hearted series, but it also tackles serious learning moments, like homelessness and finding your voice. The main character, Simon, is 11 years old and entering the fifth grade, so he’s close in age to our readers. It’s also a 2023 Sequoyah book. It's a 5.1 AR Level and does have an AR Test.
Don't forget: we meet on the 3rd Thursday of the Month from 4:00 to 4:45!
