It's only 15 days until Summer Reading 2025, and today we're learning about the Teen Cake Off. Check out this quick interview about it with YA Librarian extraordinaire: Misty!
Jessica: Misty, what is the Teen Cake Off?
Misty: Cake off is a competition that teens can partake in to see who can decorate the best Color Our World cake using a random library cake pan.
Jessica: And what is the inspiration for the Teen Cake Off?
Misty: Mustang Public Library holds a Cake Off Kick Off their Summer Reading program every year, and I learned about it at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries conference.
Jessica: Very cool. How can teens participate?
Misty: They should attend the Teen Advisory Board meeting on May 29th at 4:30 PM to sign up, draw their random cake pan, and strategize with their team about how they want to decorate their cake.
Jessica: Do they have to be in teams?
Misty: It's more fun if they do! But I get that not everyone wants to be on teams, so they can work on their own cake if they want.
Jessica: Better question: Can they have cool team names?
Misty: Sure--appropriate ones!
Jessica: Will they need to bake their own cakes, too?
Misty: Nope! We'll have that all taken care of. Sacha will bake the cakes and have them ready to decorate at the library on Tuesday, June 2nd at 1:00 PM. We'll have gotten all of the decorating supplies for them too.
Jessica: Is there anything else that the teens need to know before they get started on their plans?
Misty: Oh, they won't be able to use nuts/nut products in their cakes or decorations. We do have some allergies to be aware of. But that's it for now.
There you have it! It's going to be a DELICIOUS time! Teens: make sure you're at the library on Thursday, May 29th at 4:30 PM to start your Cake Off Journey! Decoration will take place on Tuesday, June 2nd at 1:00 PM.
And that's the way the cookie crumbles,
Jessica & Misty
