Week Two, Let's Go! This was our first week with crafts and some of our larger events, so this one hit us like a train. The beginning of the summer is exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.
We kicked off the week with one of our Mystery Sticker Murals. It's like a color by number painting with stickers in various colors and a color key that let's you know what colors go where. Check out Makiah getting us started with some green squares. You can find this upstairs near the teen library.
Monday was our first Music Monday! We jammed out to a playlist created by staff of all the songs that remind us of summer. It's a very diverse playlist with summer classics to SpongeBob songs. We also broke out our new popcorn machine that was provided by the Friends of the Duncan Public Library! We've really enjoyed getting to make fresh popcorn for patrons, and we plan to have it every Monday evening while we're jamming out. If you'd like to try out a ukulele, electric keyboard, kalimba, or a very neat drum, visit us on Music Mondays. (If anyone would like to provide LIVE MUSIC for these days, please email dploutreach@duncanok.gov or call the library at 580-255-0636!)
Monday was also the first night of Adult Crafts at the library. Check out these amazing cupcakes that patrons learned to decorate under the guidance of Sacha de Payes! Yummy and beautiful!
Teen volunteers and staff planted some seeds at the end of last week in our of seed sprouters, and we've already had some to give away! Some corn, honeydew, cucumbers, and more were available for pick up. Keep your eyes peeled when you come into the library for anything sitting in the "Free to Take" tray. We ask that you not remove plants from other parts of the seed library as they may not be ready to be planted.
On Thursday, we anxiously watched the weather to see if D.T. Ranch Country from Marlow would still be able to come by this week. Luckily, the rain broke and Diana Burns was able to bring a mini pony, a couple of goats, a Patagonian cavy, a rabbit, AND a tortoise to see the kids. Almost 200 patrons were able to see these amazing animals across two hours.
Friday morning, we got the great news that the latest Friends of the Duncan Public Library shirt was available for us to pick up from Power Print! This design features the word FREADOM (we love wordplay at the library!) and the Statue of Liberty on the front to celebrate our Freedom to Read! On the back you can see "Duncan Library" and "FOL". Sales of this super-soft and lightweight raglan shirt benefit the Friends of the Library's mission to support the Duncan Public Library in all that we do. They are truly what make amazing summer programs like the ones we have planned this year possible.
Finally, we wrapped up the week with a informational discussion on woodworking from John Hodgson! Attendees learned about this fun hobby and walked away with a handcraft book holder. Thank you again to John for leading this discussion.
Some of the highlights (unfortunately) not captured on film this week was our first Book and Build, the children's Monet painting, and our first movie of the summer. All were well attended and fun was had by all.
This next week has a lot more fun in store: Adults have Faux Stained Glass Bookmarks on Monday; Tuesday brings another Book & Build and a Faux Frames Teen Craft; Kids can learn about Kandinsky Circles on Wednesday; Thursday will have a Baby/Toddler Time AND Storytime as well as a movie at 1 PM; Friday will be the date of our annual Chalk Art Contest, and, last but not least, there will be an opportunity to build some Kiwi Crates on Saturday while supplies last. To learn more about each event, visit the library's summer reading page or come sign up and grab a calendar.
